Villa Beach, Arevalo, Iloilo, Philippines

 mama's bday 026

Business and playtime as usual for these people on the beach. At the background right, the collection of fingerlings is done to be sold to pond owners. These are to be raised and cultivated in ponds where they are fed for months and harvested for sale in the markets. At the foreground are children enjoying every splash of waves that rolled out to the shore. Cooling off the day’s heat is an everyday habit of some people living near the beach.

And now, for our prompt (optional, as always): today, I challenge you to write a poem in the form of a review. You can review either animate or inanimate things, real places or imaginary places. You can write in the style of an online review (think Yelp) or something more formal that you might find in a newspaper or magazine. (I imagine that bad reviews of past boyfriends/girlfriends might be an easy way to get into this prompt, though really, you can “review” anything in your poem, from summer reading lists for third graders to the idea of the fourth dimension).

I was not able to sleep well

because of the noise emanating from the heart.

The sound was so loud, she nearly drowned me

from the vibrations of her valves.

Probably she was already old and needs repair

and, of course, maintenance didn’t get a proper share.

And from the physical looks,

I can say, she can’t do and pass the examination that’s physical.

And so with the exam that requires the brain to think and, that’s mental.

But she can give happiness that’s utmost to all.

Give her a chance. In bed, she could do more.
